The regency administration in Cirebon, West Java, has allocated 10,000 hectares of land for organic farms, an official announced Friday. Local agriculture agency head Ali Effendi said 400 farming communities would be trained in several stages over the next five years to manage the organic farms.

In a bid to help repair soil damaged by overuse of chemical fertilizers, the Indonesian Institute of Sciences has launched microbe-based ‘Beyonic' technology to be used in the production of organic fertilizers.
"Magic seeds and magic chemicals introduced to our farmers as part of the green revolution did increase productivity, especially for rice. But this program, as a whole, has disrupted the agricultural system in the country," Endang said.
"As a result of the green revolution our endemic seeds have gradually perished and our farmers' local wisdom is no longer relevant. And worst of all, the quality of our land is deteriorating."

Is it possible to create a business where justice prevails? Where customers, owners and workers all benefit? Muharjo, the founder of organic farming business Kembang Lestari, thinks it is.
"Even though this business belongs to me, I'm thankful that all my employees and customers feel a sense of ownership, so it can be run in an atmosphere of mutual trust and honesty," explains Muharjo, 60, who pioneered his organic farming business in 1992 in his remote village of Bangkerep in Bantul, about 40 kilometers south of Yogyakarta.

The demand for food produced without synthetic chemical inputs increases in the last few years. By 2010, it is expected that organic food market assets would reached U$ 100 billion (Ditjen BPPHP Deptan, 2001). Indonesia has a potency for developing organic farming particularly in upland farming system. In order to achieved self sufficient in food demand, organic farming could be an alternative technology in supporting food security in Indonesia. In relation to this, Ministry of Agriculture through Go Organic 2010 program planned to have an established organic farms inluding its market for domestic and export. The market for organic products has grown rapidly in recent times. Consumers' preferences have been steadily shifting from traditional to organic products.
