Kompas reports that there is a growing demand for imported fruit products in Bali, dwarfing the counterpoising balance of trade in fruits being exported from the island. For the period January-August 2010 the value if imported fruits to Bali reached Rp. 540 billion (US$58.6 million) a 300% increase over the same period in 2009. By comparison, only Rp. 2 billion (US$217,000) in Bali-grown fruits were exported during this period.

Bali provincial administration is currently developing 40 integrated farming locations with Rp 8 billion *US$860,125* in funds from the provincial 2010 budget.

Made Putra Suryawan, head of Bali Agriculture office, said such integrated farming development was a breakthrough that would accelerate the integration of new farming technology with traditional farming systems.

Veco Indonesia, an NGO focusing on sustainable farming, has called on Bali residents to turn to organic alternatives in an attempt to promote healthy eating habits.

Iman Suharto from Veco admitted that public awareness of the production and consumption of healthy food remained very low among farmers, food producers and consumers in Indonesia, including in Bali.

The farmers of Masen Village were producing enough rice for eight months out of the year. To make ends meet, they were dependent on government subsidy programs and purchasing rice from other communities.

Caritas CR began working with the farmers of Masen Village in October 2008 to establish a demonstration plot for intensive rice paddy cultivation using the organic system of rice intensification (SRI) method.
